Isn’t life funny…before I had kids, I felt like I had all the time in the world, and I ate whatever I wanted every day. After becoming a mom, there is barely any time to eat between driving the kids everywhere, preparing meals, and doing house chores; however, now I am a lot more conscientious of what goes in my body because 1) as a breastfeeding mom, what I eat eventually becomes what my baby eats, and 2) I need the strength to survive motherhood. So, I stepped up my snacking game and, not only am I choosing to eat snacks that have enough nutrition to fuel my body and boost my energy, I also buy organic whenever possible. Ralphs (operated by Kroger) makes eating organic easy with the Simple Truth® brand by offering lots of organic snack options in their stores. As September was National Organic Harvest Month, or otherwise known as Organic Food Celebration Month, I am trying my best to eat organic food as much as I can. With that said, I am excited to share with you my top 5 snacks – most of which are organic – for when I am on-the-go!
Packed with unsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and other important vitamins and minerals, nuts have numerous benefits that make them one of the best snacks for moms. They are easy to store and easy to pack, so you can even snack on them while chasing after your kids. I often run into Ralphs on the way to a mommy & me class with my toddler to grab a few bags at a time to last me the week. I just have to watch out and remember sensible portion sizes.
- Dried Fruits
Sure, eating fruits in their natural form is probably better for you, but that would involve washing the fruits, finding a place to throw away the peel or core, and washing your hands to get rid of the stickiness. Plus, with young kids, the only thing you can be certain about is that something unexpected will happen, which means you will forget to eat the fruits that you have with you, and they will end up rotting and becoming a nasty mess in your car or in the diaper bag. Therefore, when I am eating on-the-go, I would much rather stick with dried fruits because they are mess-free and easy to eat anywhere. Just make sure you read the ingredients and purchase the ones with the fruit as the only ingredient!
- Freeze-Dried Fruits
I know what you are thinking – you already said you like dried fruits, so why are you listing it again? Because freeze-dried fruits are completely different! If you have never tried freeze-dried fruits, you are missing out. Instead of dehydrating the fruits by heating them carefully to remove moisture, the temperature instead is lowered to below freezing. Then, as the temperature raises slowly, the ice crystals evaporate into the air, moving about 90% of the moisture content. As a result, the texture of the freeze-dried fruits is light and crispy, and the taste is similar to that of fresh fruits. I do have to warn you though, the crunchiness of freeze-dried fruits makes them sure to become a favorite!
- Trail Mix
I love organic trail mix because I get a mixture of nuts and a variety of dried fruits, which means a handful of trail mix covers a spectrum of nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and vitamins. If you are feeling tired, snacking on trail mix would for sure give you the boost of energy that you need to get through the rest of the day. Eating the ones with chocolate is tempting but you lose the benefit of a healthy organic snack.
Crackers are great on-the-go snacks because they are resistant to mom-brain – meaning, if I totally forget to take the crackers out of the car because I am too busy carrying my diaper bag, my kids’ belongings, plus my kids themselves, the crackers are still good to eat the next day. They are also versatile – you can eat them by themselves, or combine them with other food items like cheese or peanut butter. Picking whole-grain crackers is a great way to keep hunger at bay until you get time to eat a proper meal.
And there you have it! My top 5 busy mom snacks on-the-go. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about what I take to drink with me to wash down the snacks! Water, of course, is very important to keep us hydrated, but sometimes water just doesn’t hit the spot.
I discovered Honest Tea® when I ran into Ralphs one day, parched from spending a hot day out in the sun at the park with my kids. I looked in the beverage aisle and saw that Honest Tea has different delicious flavors available, and I grabbed a few to try them out. My favorite is the Pomegranate Blue Flavored Herbal Tea, which is just a tad sweet and full of fruity flavor.
I really like that Honest Tea is brewed with real ingredients so that it tastes just like how I would make my tea at home. All Honest Teas are organic and fair trade, which means that Honest Tea pays a “premium” on top of the market price that goes directly back to the farmers. The farmers then use this “premium” to invest in farms and communities and help to establish improved farming, healthcare, and education initiatives. How great is that?
So, think twice next time you reach for your old go-to snack. Choose to snack on some nuts or crackers if you feel like having something salty, or go the sweet route with dried or freeze-dried fruits. Can’t decide? You don’t have to with a bag of trail mix! And don’t forget to grab a bottle of Honest Tea from your nearby Kroger or Sprouts store – you can learn more about Honest Tea plus get some fun recipe, project, and mom-on-the-go inspiration here!
