Thank You, Garbage Truck Drivers
I never thought much about garbage trucks before having kids. I knew to take out the garbage on garbage day, and magically, when I returned home from work, all the garbage was gone and I had the satisfaction of dragging back into the garage empty garbage bins. Until… Alex was born.
Thank you, garbage truck drivers, for making garbage day the best of the week for both mommy and son. Every Thursday afternoon, we get dressed, put on our shoes, and patiently wait for the garbage truck to arrive. Once we hear the garbage truck coming around the corner, we rush out and start following it around the neighborhood for an hour or so. When you are a mom dealing with terrible two’s, nothing tops an hour of mindlessly following a garbage truck with a super happy toddler.
Thank you, garbage truck drivers, for making my son look forward to school. Several mornings every week a garbage truck comes and empties the commercial garbage bin in the parking lot of Alex’s school. It comes at different times, so we don’t catch it all the time, but when we do, it changes my son’s attitude for the whole day. The garbage truck driver lets my son sit in the garbage truck and touch all the controls (after he turned the truck off, of course) and sometimes he even lets my son sit on his lap and pull on the horn! Alex then walks into his school like he is the most special kid in the world (which to us, he is!).
Thank you, garbage truck drivers, for making me run after my son so I can get my cardio in every week. An hour of slow jog is the most exercise I can manage in a day. Every garbage day, I feel less guilty about eating chocolate at night due to the calories burned.
Thank you, garbage truck drivers, for making my dog happy. She gets to come along when we chase you around the neighborhood, and she loves nothing more than walks. Well, maybe she loves fetching balls more, but I swear she perks up when she hears you driving around the corner.
And finally, thank you, garbage truck drivers, for emptying the trash bins full of dirty diapers, a.k.a. the smelliest things in the whole world.
Do your kids love garbage trucks?
